Junior Raider Latchkey

The Junior Raider Latchkey program provides childcare services for children 3-4 years of age. Latchkey for preschool age students is located at the Early Childhood Center. The program is designed to provide a safe, healthy, caring and fun-filled atmosphere while promoting social and emotional growth, and kindergarten readiness.  The program is play-based, allowing the very young child the opportunity to develop social skills while engaging in organized and free play activities. Independence and socialization are encouraged.  Children must be completely potty-trained in order to attend.  An up-to-date health appraisal and immunization record/waiver must be submitted at the time of registration.  The Junior Raider Latchkey program works in conjunction with the Tuition Based Preschool programs.

The district is currently providing breakfast and lunch at no extra charge.  Latchkey will provide an afternoon snack.

Junior Raider Latchkey is open daily (Monday-Friday) from 7:00am-5:30pm.  All Latchkey programs are closed during holidays when school is not in session.

Registration is now open for the 2024-2025 school year.   The registration form posted below must be completed and returned to register.

Elementary Latchkey

The Elementary Latchkey program provides before and after-school childcare for kindergarten through 6th grade students at the Early Childhood Center (ECC). Students enrolled in the Elementary Latchkey programs are dropped off and picked up at the Early Childhood Center located at 409 Chamberlain Street.  Elementary students will ride a district school bus to and from their elementary school at the start and end of the school day if they return for the after-school program.  Upon returning, students are offered an afternoon snack at no extra charge.

It is the philosophy of the Latchkey program that all children are individuals that develop at their own rate. It is the goal of the program to strive to meet the needs of each child and to promote social and emotional growth by providing organized and free play activities.  Independence and a positive self-image are encouraged.  The Elementary Latchkey program provides childcare services for children ages 5-12, or through the end of 6th grade.

Latchkey is open daily from 7:00am until the start of the school day and again from the end of the school day until 5:30pm.  On half days of school and early dismissal days, Latchkey will be open normal hours and is available for childcare at the early dismissal time.  The district shuttle buses will provide transportation.  Latchkey follows the same schedule as the official school calendar for holiday closings.  When school is closed due to inclement weather, please watch for school closing announcements from the district, or check your local news stations for school/latchkey information.  You can also register for text message alerts.

Students who attend Latchkey must be registered one full day prior to starting the program.

Summer Latchkey

Flushing Community Schools also offers a Summer Latchkey program at the Early Childhood Center. Summer Latchkey accepts children 3 through 12 years of age. Children that have just completed 6th grade are still eligible to attend the program. If your child is NOT presently enrolled in the Flushing School District, you will need to have a complete physical and immunization record on file before your child's first day of attendance in the program.  Summer Latchkey is held at the Early Childhood Center.  Registration forms for the Summer 2025 program will be posted right after spring break, April 7th, 2025.

Medicines at School

Medicines that are to be given in the Latchkey program must be accompanied by a Flushing Community Schools Medicine At School form completed and signed by the child's physician and parents. Medicine must be in the original container. This applies to prescription and over-the-counter medications. Medication will be administered by the Latchkey staff or a Flushing Community Schools employee.
