2017-2018 Outstanding Scholars
McCayla Wallace
With a 4.118 GPA, McCayla Paris Wallace is graduating as valedictorian of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. For two years, she was the captain of the FHS Robotics Team that qualified for the State Championships. McCayla also took 2nd place in the Flint Metro League Math and Science Competition Chemistry Lab. McCayla has also received the Girl Scout Gold Award. McCayla plans on majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Kettering University, where she has been granted the Presidential Merit Scholarship. She is the daughter of Steven and Catherine Wallace.
Shelby Shaughnessy
Shelby Ann Shaughnessy is the daughter of Matt and Kris Shaughnessy. Graduating with a 4.071 GPA, Shelby plans to study Neuroscience at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has been awarded the John Marcum Memorial Scholarship and the John F. & Edith L. Wilsterman Scholarship Trust. She is the President of the Science National Honor Society, and a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Shelby is the Captain of the Varsity Cross Country team and has qualified for the State Cross Country Championship meet two times. She was a Flint Metro League Scholar Athlete.
Joshua Stemczynski
The son of Chris and Mary Stemczynski, Joshua Robert Stemczynski is graduating with a 4.069 GPA. He will be attending the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, majoring in Neurology. He was awarded the Regents Merit Scholarship and the Stephen T. Phillips Memorial Scholarship. Joshua is a member of Mu Alpha Theta. He was an All State Honors Choir Member his junior and senior year. Joshua and his FHS Swim Relay team members broke two school records in his senior year.
Dylan Stankewicz
Dylan Patrick Stankewicz is the son of Dennis and Merrilee Stankewicz. He will graduate with a 4.066 GPA. Dylan has received the Award for Excellence Scholarship at Grand Valley State University, where he plans to study Pre-Med. Dylan was also awarded the EMHA Bob Landaal Scholarship. While at FHS, Dylan has been a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society and is the Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta. Dylan is a Scholar Athlete and has received his Varsity Letter in Hockey, Soccer, and Golf.
Jenna Tesner
Jenna Renee Tesner will attend Michigan State University to pursue a degree in Apparel and Textile Design and Communications. At FHS, she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Art National Honor Society. Jenna has been awarded Artist of the Month and Unpaid Learner of the Month. She will graduate with a 4.054 GPA. Jenna is the daughter of Rich and Lori Tesner.
Grant Young
Graduating with a 4.053 GPA, Grant Matthew Young will attend the University of Michigan, Flint to study Pre-Dentistry. He is the son of Matthew and Pamela Young. Grant is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. He has received the University of Michigan, Flint, Signature Merit Scholarship, as well as the Edgar L. Cornwell Scholarship. Grant is also the recipient of the Flushing Alumni Association Scholarship. He was also named Co-Op Student of the Month twice, High School Student of the Month, and is a Scholar Athlete.
Mitchell Lucky
Mitchell James Lucky will attend the Illinois Institute of Technology this fall with a goal of studying Chemical Engineering. With a 4.051 GPA, Mitchell is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. From the Illinois Institute of Technology he has received the Heald Scholarship, the STEM+ Scholarship, and the Elevate Scholarship. Mitchell has also been awarded the Moms Who Care Scholarship. Mitchell is the son of David and Jamal Lucky.
Nicholas Montpas
Nicholas Anthony Montpas will attend Michigan State University in the fall where he plans to study Pre-Med. He is the son of Anthony and Lori Montpas. Nicholas is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. He is also a Scholar Athlete. Nicholas is graduating with a 4.047 GPA.
Abigail Upleger
Abigail Marie Upleger is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and will graduate with a 4.038 GPA. She will attend Spring Arbor University where she has been awarded the Trustee Scholarship. Abigail has also won the Elaine and Marion Rumsey Scholarship. Abigail plans to study Urban Ministry. She has been named Unpaid Learner of the Month. Abigail has received a Level 9 Senior Gymnastics Award. She is the daughter of Josh and Angie Upleger.
Alexander Bowden
Alexander Hunter Bowden is graduating with a 4.034 GPA. He will attend Kalamazoo College to study Pre-Dentistry. Alexander is the son of Scott and Lori Bowden. He was awarded the Lux Esto Scholarship, the Mandelle Award, the Merrill Award, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, and the Edgar L. Cornwell Scholarship. He is also the recipient of the Roberta Reed McWilliams Endowment Fund Scholarship, the John F. & Edith L. Wilsterman Scholarship Trust, and the Alpha Kappa Sorority Scholarship. Alexander is also an Academic All State Baseball Player and a Scholar Athlete. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society.
Cassandra Thoms
Cassandra Grace Thoms is graduating with a 4.029 GPA. She plans to study Dance and Exercise Science at Grand Valley State University. Cassandra is the daughter of Mark and Jane Thoms. While at FHS, Cassandra was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. Cassandra was awarded the Award for Excellence and the Dance Program Scholarship at Grand Valley State University.
Jenna Bemis
Jenna Lee Bemis, the daughter of James and Kenna Bemis. She is graduating with a 4.024 GPA. Jenna plans on attending the University of Michigan, Flint, where she has received the Full Tuition Scholarship. While at FHS, Jenna was Concertmaster of the Orchestra. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society.
Cassidy Caulkins
Cassidy Faith Caulkins is planning to attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she will study Costume Design. Cassidy will graduate with a 4.021 GPA and has received the H.A.I.L. Scholarship. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Cassidy is the daughter of Dale Caulkins and Jami Caulkins.
Meghan Donnelly
Meghan Elizabeth Donnelly is the daughter of John Donnelly and Amy Donnelly. Meghan will attend Michigan State University in the fall where she will study Microbiology. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Science National Honor Society. Meghan will graduate with a 4.011 GPA and has received the McNally Endowed Scholarship and the Edgar L. Cornwell Scholarship. While at FHS, Meghan was the 2017 Flushing Varsity Ski Rookie of the Year and an Unpaid Learner of the Month.
Halle Bartlett
Halle Noelle Bartlett, will attend Belmont University this fall, studying Music Business and Audio Engineering. Halle received the Belmont University General Academic Scholarship, Edgar L. Cornwell Scholarship, the Jan Liepman Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship, and the Clydesdale Education Foundation Scholarship. Halle is also the recipient of the Flushing Alumni Association Scholarship and the John F. & Edith L. Wilsterman Scholarship Trust. With a 4.010 GPA, Halle is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rotary Interact Club. She is a member of the Michigan School of Vocal Music All State Honors Choir, a Rotary Student of the Month, and the Class of 2018 Homecoming Queen. Halle is the daughter of Quinton and Phaedra Bartlett.
Olivia Wallace
Olivia Rose Wallace is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and will graduate with a 4.010 GPA. Olivia plans to attend Harvard University where she will study Anthropology. While at FHS, Olivia received an award for Rising Female Director and Best Teen Short Film. Olivia is the daughter of Mike and Nicole Bowers Wallace.
Hannah Cox
Hannah Nicole Cox is the daughter of Edward and Donna Cox. Hannah is a member of the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society and will graduate with a 4.008 GPA. Hannah plans to attend Grand Valley State University where she will study Nursing. Hannah has been awarded the Grand Valley Award for Excellence Scholarship, the Harold “Hal” Scoville Scholarship, the Roberta Reed McWilliams Endowment Fund Scholarship, as well as the Thompson Working Family Scholarship. While at FHS, Hannah has been a Rotary Student of the Month, a Scholar Athlete, and a Class of 2018 Homecoming Representative.
